At the centre of the work is a triptych drawn in soft pencil. A quiet scene unfolds around a narrow stream: water flows gently from the cavity of an ear shell. In the lower right half is a self-portrait of the artist. She reaches toward something in the water, her gesture tentative, searching. Opposite her, an unfamiliar figure holds the ear in both hands. It remains unclear whether they are the source of the stream or merely drawing from it.
Above the middle panel drapes an arc of cast ears, and within the round glass tube run the same red strings that hang behind the triptych. Upon closer examination, these red threads can also be found woven into the golden strands that spill from the triptych. On the floor, the red and gold entangle.
